Our History
The Culpeper Winter Heat Shelter began in 2008 by the efforts of six local Pastors. Churches took turns one week at a time hosting homeless individuals. In 2016, the shelter found a season long home at St. Lutheran Church, 1100 N. Main Street.
The overnight shelter can accommodate up to 20 men and 9 women. Approximately 70 to 80 homeless adults are served annually, typically providing up to 2500 bed nights and serving over 8,000 meals. It continues to be a collective effort of over 20 areas church congregations, local businesses, individual donors, and non-profit foundations.
In 2019, a daytime campus began operating its doors to registered shelter guests on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Reformation Lutheran Church, 601 Madison Road, Culpeper, VA 22701. Limited dental services are offered courtesy of the Culpeper Wellness Foundation and the Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic. (Note: The daytime campus is closed until further notice.)
